John is a former international, competing at the 1994 Commonwealth Games for Northern Ireland, in the 100km Team Time Trail, and the 10m Scratch and 40km Points on the track.

Although an all-rounder, John concentrates primarily on the track these days.  Indeed, he was part of the AgiskoViner Team Pursuit Team which won the 2008 British Team Pursuit Championship.  Other highlights in the past few years have included winning the National Hard Track Endurance League in both 2007 and 2008, winning the British Masters 25km Points Race in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and the British Masters 15km Scratch Race in 2007 and 2008 (35-39 age group) and picking up a silver in the British Madison Championship with Joel Stewart in 2007.

Other achievements include personal best times of 19-53 for 10m, and 51-36 for 25m time trials.
